Warrabilla Reserve Shiraz

Expert Reviews

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Deep, intense crimson-purple; the red wines of Warrabilla defy logic: why would you even contemplate 17% alcohol in the first place, but how do you end up with a shiraz that has no alcohol warmth, let alone heat, and not be extractive? And be drinkable now? While it is not a style I particularly enjoy, it is hard to deny its place.

Not for everyone, in any way, these wines have plenty of everything including very ripe raspberry and cola flavours.

Unique wine; the saturated colour, the alcohol and the fruit all suggest it should be a forbidden drink for the next 10 years, but it doesn't work that way. What you do need is a roasted ox on a barbecue.

The still very high alcohol (but lower than Parola's) results in more expression; plum, prune, blackberry and a touch of licorice; has spent a perfunctory 10 months in French and American oak which has barely made an impression

Winemaker Andrew Sutherland Smith reckons that he's a balanced bloke; he has a chip on both his shoulders. His family once part-owned All Saints Estate, and ever since he left he's had a point to prove. 2006 RELEASE Super rich, super big, super sweet and super lovely. It tastes of caramel, blackberry jubes, iodine, smoke and tar, its sixteen per cent alcohol taken wholly in its stride. A top example of the monster red style, DRINK 2008-2012.

Predictably massive, mouth-flooding, blackberry fruit is the first sensation, alcohol kicking in hard on the finish.

Opaque purple-red; dense black fruits; lots of fruit impact, though the structure isn't as strong as it might be; needs to loosen up; 16° alcohol.

Dense colour; licorice, blackberry and spice; potent and concentrated; abundant but soft tannins. Excellent development potential.

Full red-purple; clean, but complex, black fruits, a touch of earth, and evident vanilla oak; 16 degrees alcohol.
