Effusive tropical fruit aromas tighten up on the crisp palate, which is long and clean with a crisp finish.

This is one of the Reliables, in many ways the most remarkable of them because it has defied belief for ten years. How does Westend make such a good sauvignon blanc so consistently in such a warm area? At least part of the secret must be in early picking. If I wore a hat with the aplomb that Peter Bourne manages, I'd doff my lid to them. This is gently aromatic, vibrant and juicy, with ripe tropical flavours, a hint of grassiness and zesty, tangy acidity to finish. Just a hint of passionfruit lingers in the memory

We tend to be keen to salute our Quaff champions - like this superbly consistent, style-breaking white from the Riverina. It has spent the best part of a decade (nine years) as one of the Reliables. There's an added dimension of complexity to the 2008 Richland Sauvignon Blanc that makes it more than a delicious drink. There are green bean and green pepper characters on the nose and palate with some complexing gunflint, smoky notes. It's lean, tightly structured with zesty acidity adding a refreshing quality on the finish.

Clean, fresh and lively aromas; well made, tending neutral on the palate, but does have length.

A drum roll for the Riverina's best and Quaffs most consistent sauvignon blanc of all time. In 2007, it has that bright grassy, green bean character that heralds a crisp, clean, fruity wine.

I was taking a peek at my predecessor's first ever guide the other day and bless me, way back there in 2000 he was tipping sauv blanc as the next big thing. If he ever remembers doing that, he'll be unbearable, but what a good call. I for one would have given long odds. Soft, spicy, gooseberry, lantana—this is a good, overt Aussie effort, though about as subtle as Paris Hilton. Just enough zippy acidity to carry it, and good value for savvy lovers.

Trust the Reliables from Quaff- sure can! Seven years on the trot Westend has defied the stereotype of the Riverina and made sauvignon zing! This is up a notch on last year's - wonderfully clean, fresh, even vibrant with grassy, green pea flavours and a zesty finish.

Far more going for it than one might expect; good balance and mouthfeel; gooseberry and tropical fruit. Value.

This wine is a winemaking anomaly. Each year it showcases all the lively varietal characteristics of a good sauvignon blanc and when I taste it in a blind line up I never even get close to its provenanceÑthe Riverina. It's won awards in this book, I've tasted it plenty of times and it still gets me. Tricky bugger of a wineÑ bloody good, too.

This is a terrific quaffer. It's clean, fresh and vibrant, has tropical fruit (gooseberry, lychee, guava) and fresh herb flavours (green bean, green peas). There's a touch of minerality and some refreshing racy acidity to finish. All the things you'd want in a sauvignon. A bargain.

Our non-drinking mate Billy Calabria of Westend has done it again. This wine now enters the don't buy wine without me Hall of Fame, having garnered three consecutive five-star ratings. Quite remarkable for a grape variety that many people believe to be unsuited to the Riverina region. Obviously those people are wrongÑwhatever they're doing at Westend they're doing it right. Top wine yet again.

For the fourth year in a row, this terrific - and terrific value - savvy comes up well in our tastings. It's unmistakably, even exaggeratedly varietal (i.e. it tastes of the grape variety it's made from), with really obvious green pea-pod smells, and crisp, racy juiciness in the mouth. Like a reggae concert: live and direct and headily herbal.

They've done it again! The 2002 vintage of this wine was probably the best-value sauvignon blanc in the country but I must admit to thinking it would probably be a one-off thanks to a cool vintage up in the Riverina. But clearly there's a bit of depth to the winemakers at Westend. This year's version is a ripper too, a true varietal expression of sauvignon blancÑgrassy and herbaceous, with fresh acid and a bracing tang on the palateÑand spectacularly awesome value

A great endorsement of Bill Calabria's Griffith- based Westend winery, this is the second year in a row that this budget-priced sauvignon came out as one of the best in our tasting. We liked it most because it tasted like the variety is meant to taste (something that can't be said for many sauvignon blancs under $15): it has really grassy, herbal smells, and a light, fresh, green pea and citrus flavour in the mouth.

With sales in excess of 100 000 cases, Bill Calabria's Griffith-based Westend winery is one of the smaller players in the Riverina. But the quality can be impressive even with its budget-priced 'Richland' label. One of the very few wines at this price point with distinctive, sauvignon blanc character, some herbal notes on the nose, clean, fresh and light-bodied green pea and herbal flavours and a crisp, dryish finish.
