Western Range Wines Julimar Shiraz Viognier

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

When most people think of WA wine regions, they think of Margaret River first, then Great Southern but what about the Chittering Valley? Don’t worry if you’ve not heard of it because it’s WA’s little vinous secret, found just north of Perth. This Shiraz Viognier was awarded a very respectable 94 points from wine writer James Halliday. It’s got the trademark Viognier floral lift with black fruits, plum and vanillin oak before a medium bodied palate that’s balanced and moreish.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour: Deep garnet red with purple edges.

Bouquet: Intense aroma of mocha, plums and perfumed oak with a floral lift created by the Viognier.

Palate: Rich and full with generous oak and natural grape tannins, creates an intensely balanced long finish.

Cuisine: Ideal with juicy red meat dishes and dark chocolate.

Outstanding follow-up to the excellent 2006. This is a multi-trophy and gold medal winner. Warm vibrant savoury plum aromas with a light earthy dusting. Full flavoured rich palate is lifted with the aromatics and spiciness of viognier. It's well balanced with ripe tannins and well-weighted oak merging seamlessly.

Almost magenta colour, this wine has a very ripe, liqueur-like nose and magnificent balance between top-notch, super-ripe fruit, velvety tannins and oak.

James Halliday (2006 Vintage) says
A fragrant bouquet so typical of the blend; the medium-bodied palate has juicy red fruits, well-handled tannins and oak input. Long finish.

Peter Forrestal (2006 Vintage) says
Western Range, one of two largish wineries in the Perth Hills region, has its winery in the Chittering Valley but sources fruit from throughout the region. It has a superb 2006 Chardonnay and this delicious red. While some may be put off by the labelling, this is one of the great Western Australian bargains: juicy, densely concentrated with oak and extract matched by fruit weight, luscious blackberries and vibrant vanilla.

Ray Jordan (2006 Vintage) says
Damn good wine, this. IT was a very cool vintage but this suited the warmer areas such as the Perth Hills. Stacks of intense and concentrated riches on the palate which is seamless and velvety with very fine tannin and neatly applied oak.
