Cracka Review

Here’s a wine that you could happily serve, even to members of the ABC (anything but Chardonnay) crowd who can’t abide any form of oak in their wine. Thankfully the nice folk at Wignalls have spared the wood to bring you fruit that’s good! It’s a fruit filled nose of melon and citrus that would pair nicely with a warm chicken salad or some simply cooked seafood. The citrus theme dominates the palate with a nicely creamy texture and a clean, acid finish. Just right for a summer’s day picnic or relaxed alfresco lunch in the sun.

Winemaker's Notes

A relatively cool and extended fermenting period was the main winemaking orientation with the outstanding fruit in 2011. Our Unwooded Chardonnay exhibits fresh melons with overtones of Citrus and Lime on the nose.

The palate consists of up front crushed Lime juice, fresh acid and citrus with creaminess and length generated by extended lees contact in tank prior to bottling. This allowed the fruit to express itself with little human intervention and also with little preservative being used throughout the maturation period.

Suitable for drinking now and will age in bottle for up to five years due to the fine acid balance. Best food matching is Seafood and Pasta.

Ray Jordan (2011 Vintage) says
Consistently a very good wine from these guys. It's always kept tight and keen with restrained though still flavoursome and intense fruit, but with a crisp lingering acid that holds it together. Nice current drinking wine. Drink in the first couple of years.

A fragrant bouquet and lively palate are perfectly judged for the unwooded style, with grapefruit, nectarine and white peach fruit; I haven't the faintest idea how this was achieved at 14.5% alcohol.

A lot to like about this unwooded chardie with its melon citrusy fruit intensity on the nose and palate. Yes, it's a simple straightforward wine, but immensely appealing as a drink now proposition.

A fragrant and delicious crossover between chardonnay and sauvignon blanc showing, once again, how well unwooded chardonnays work with good quality, cool-grown grapes.

Quite intense and rich; a mix of ripe stone fruit and lemony acidity; nice balance and length. Well above average.
