Wild Oats Mudgee Chardonnay

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

The Wild Oats wines come from the Oatley family one of Australian wine success stories. Not content with selling Rosemount they resurrected themselves with a base in Mudgee and now make wines using premium grapes from regions all over Australia. This Chardonnay crafted in a modern style is made with fruit sourced from Mudgee. You’ll find a crisp wine with dominant flavours of citrus and melon and gentle rather than overbearing oak influence adds complexity. It would pair well with a chicken Caeser salad or spaghetti and fresh pesto.

Winemaker's Notes

Wild Oats Chardonnay is crafted in a modern style – full bodied yet crisp, with lifted citrus and melon flavours. Mudgee is home to some of the oldest chardonnay vines in Australia and has a long history of producing outstanding, award-winning wines from this most popular white varietal. Wild Oats is a contemporary take on the style, where oak supports rather than dominates the well-defined fruit character.

WINESTATE (2009 Vintage) says
Fresh, green aromas and a long, rich, creamy palate with subtle use of oak.

James Halliday (2007 Vintage) says
Melon and fig, and lots of toast on the bouquet; clean fruit, but lacks excitement and precision.

Big, exotic and flavoursome. Citrus and peach characters dominate. Some custard-like aromas and bright, lively tropical flavours.

Not complex, but fresh and lively, cleverly balanced by subliminal residual sugar.

They're back! We always knew they would be. The Oatley family used to own quite a lot of Southcorp before they pulled the rug out and sold to Fosters (and didn't that turn out well?). Now they're in the wine game again, and based in Mudgee. The Wild Oats range sources fruit from all over but this chardy is from home turf. It's a lovely drinkable wine with good flavour. And I really love the packaging.
