Willow Creek WCV Pinot Noir

Cracka Review

Colour: Vibrant bright red.

Bouquet: Fragrant strawberry and raspberry aromas, with some notes of dried herbs and flowers.

Palate: Generous flavours of red berries are persistent on the soft, well-balanced palate. Eminently drinkable now, but with sufficient structure from the acid and tannin to reward short term cellaring.

Expert Reviews

Jeremy Oliver (2008 Vintage) says
A great little quaffing pinot whose rather pungent and minty aromas of maraschino cherries, redcurrants, baked earth and undertones of musk, eucalypt and forest floor precede a forward and vibrant palate with juicy flavours underpinned by loose-knit tannin. It finishes fresh and fruity, with a savoury aspect.

Clean, straightforward and varietal; cherries and spice, with fine acid and velvety texture.

Scented with a floral perfume, it's spicy and meaty, smooth and sappy, but also rather green-edged. Its sweet red cherry and berry-like fruit has a slightly cooked aspect, while its acids and finely textured tannins do become slightly metallic at the finish. It does reveal some spicy clove and cinnamon characters, plus a hint of smoky oak.

A plush, smooth and oaky modern wine with the depth of vibrant, juicy fruit to carry it with ease. Its spicy fragrance of white pepper, sweet red and black berries and chocolate/vanilla oak precedes a plush and deeply flavoured palate. Framed by pliant, firm tannins, its carefully integrated and lingering palate evenly marries intense fruit and oak, finishing with nuances of licorice and blackberry.

A sappy, slightly confectionary pinot mat should flesh out with delightful consequences. Its spicy aromas of red cherries, raspberries and dusty vanilla oak reveal undertones of cassis and undergrowth, while its slightly sappy palate is smooth and forward, showing some genuine structure and depth. Balanced and harmonious, it finishes with a sug-gestion of dried herbs.

For a brief while this winery was going to revolutionise the Mornington Peninsula; unfortunately the wines didn't quite match the hype. All hat and no cowboy' as they say across the big pond. Then there was a quiet revamping and now, under winemaker Phil Kearney, we have both hat and cowboy. This isn't their top pinot but it is great value, all silk and lace and gorgeous deep blackcurrant fruit.
