Cracka Review

If you ever watched the movie Sideways you’ll remember when the chief character Miles refused to drink Merlot. It’s one of those grapes that some people get very superior about, yet if they tried more Merlot like this one from Witchmount, perhaps they would eat their words. This is well-weighted with berry fruit and notes of mocha that carry through onto the plush palate. Softness comes from the tannin structure and there’s admirable persistence on the finish.

Winemaker's Notes

Colour Dense rich garnet.

Nose Intense red berry nose with choc/mocha overtones. These characters are well Integrated and support the oak component.

Palate The medium bodied palate has ripe berry fruit with mocha characters. Ripe tannins give this merlot great length with a softness of fruit expected of good merlot. It will reward medium term cellaring.

Witchmount Estate Lowen Park Merlot

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
This is the first 'straight' merlot to be released under the Witchmount name. Decent wine but as with so many Aussie merlots, it needs work. In its favour is the amount of flavour, which shows good concentration. Elements of it are velvety too, always an attractive trait. What concerns us, though, are the gamey notes and the (too) drying finish.
