Xabregas Artisan Syrah

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

This wine is getting towards the top of the heap from Xabregas Estate, and it has an interesting twist - its contains a small percentage of the white grape, Roussanne. It's an elegant, restrained style of wine that shows attractive red cherries, dark plums and mocha on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and quite graceful, with sweet-fruit flavours of berries and cherries, a touch of meaty savouriness, fine, sultry tannins, and a dry, spicy finish.

Winemaker's Notes

A rich crimson coloured wine showing coffee and dark chocolate notes on the nose. The 2010 Artisan Syrah has notes of cherries and sweetly- spiced plums with some gamey components. Fruit, oak and tannin are well integrated, giving this wine a good structure and finish.

Ray Jordan (2009 Vintage) says
The decision to call this syrah is an intentional attempt to delineate the style which is finer and more restrained than the traditional opulence of this variety in Australian arm climate areas. This is silky smooth with a fine satiny palate structure. Fine grained oak and precise tannins supported an effortlessly long and refined palate. Lovely mouth feel with stacks of lingering smooth flavours. Like that savoury gravelly character on the finish.

Shiraz co-fermented with roussanne. Deep hue and dense, concentrated dark-fruit aromas overlaid with peppery high-notes. Very spicy and slightly foresty. Excellent flavour and complexity, full bodied with spot-on ripeness, and good balance.

James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Here is a wine that jumps out of the glass with a pongy, reductive opening, but a good swirl of the glass reveals layers of black fruits spice and mineral complexity; the palate is lively and savoury, with tar, earth, spice and game on display, and the tannins, while plentiful, are ripe and fine; long and intriguing savoury Syrah.
