Xanadu Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

Xanadu has always of making wines that are full of lively fruit characters showing depth and precision but always allowing the personality of the region to shine through. In the case of this wine it could come from nowhere but the Margaret River. It’s the white blend that has made the region famous thanks to all the vitality in the fruit. It’s nicely tropical with a rich vein of passionfruit and lychee as well as citrus aromas from the Semillon. The flavours present a tropical party on the palate with refreshing acids and great length. It would be perfect with some fresh prawns with a dill mayonnaise.

Winemaker's Notes

Appearance: Pale straw with slight green tinge.

Nose: The vibrant bouquet displays freshly squeezed citrus characters with passionfruit and dried herbs in the background.

Palate: Medium bodied, the lively palate offers zesty lemon/lime flavours combined wiht guava and hints of thyme and spice. An easy drinking ‘Classic’ Margaret River wine style with wonderful purity - fruit driven, honest and lip-smacking with crisp acidity and a clean refreshing finish.

Xanadu Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

Expert Reviews

Tyson Stelzer (2012 Vintage) says
An almost even blend of sauvignon from Karridale in Margaret River’s cool south and semillon from Xanadu’s estate vineyard, fermented partly in French oak barrels and stirred on its lees for several months to build complexity and texture. The result is powerful and punchy, shot with aromas of green peppers, mixed herbs, lifted frangipane pungency and even notes of exotic spice. The palate is driven by fresh citrus zest and a savoury, peppery overtone, finely structured texture and persistent, taut acidity.

Trads the fine line of combining restraint and elegance with fruit intensity. IT works so well. Passionfruit and dried herbs on the nose with that subtle oak influence muted in the background. The palate has a tight lean feel to it yet the flavour builds relentlessly to a long finish. Brilliantly crafted wine.

WA Wine Guide 2013
Jeremy Oliver (2011 Vintage) says
Complex and needing time to integrate, it reveals a fresh, lightly dusty and herbal bouquet whose pristine fragrance of white flowers and lavender, gooseberries and melon are backed by nuances of stonefruit, cassis and nutty vanilla oak. Mineral and tightly focused, with a chalky, bath salt-like texture, its long palate of tangy citrus, passionfruit and melon flavour has a bitey finish of crisp acids and a lingering note of lemon sherbet.

James Halliday (2010 Vintage) says
Very artfully made, with an overall precision and purity driving through to the finish of the palate; not until then is the touch of barrel ferment revealed. The primary flavours are razor sharp, lemon juice improbably melding with passionfruit and guava. An exceptional wine from the premier region for this blend.

This wine is just so right. From the opening mix of herbs and grassiness blended with a little tropical fruit, through to the fine and precise palate with its added dimension of barrel fermentation influence. It says Margaret River blended white. And it says itÕs one of the best.Ê A cracker.
The West Australian Wine Guide
Nick Stock (2010 Vintage) says
The Xanadu whites are on form, and this classic Margaret River blend is every bit as good as you'd want: bright citrus and tropical edges, and some stone fruits in the mix too. Superb clarity and balance on the palate: this is really smoothly honed and long on flavour; finishes fresh and tidy.
The Good Wine Guide
James Halliday (2009 Vintage) says
Has more structural complexity than most, and complementary flavour complexity, with herbs, grass, strong citrus and an envelope of more tropical fruit; good acidity to close.
Australian Wine Companion 2011 2010
Jeremy Oliver (2009 Vintage) says
A typically punchy, pungent regional blend with a touch of class. Intense pineapple, melon and tropical fruit aromas are backed by herbaceous and lightly floral nuances, while its round, smooth and silky palate wraps vibrant and mouthfilling fruit in a tightly focused cut of lemony acid. Right on the button.

James Halliday (2008 Vintage) says
clean bouquet hints at the flavours of citrus, stone fruit and kiwi fruit on the palate, the texture and structure suggesting a touch of oak; good length and balance
Australian Wine Companion 2010 2009
Ray Jordan (2008 Vintage) says
This is a more sophisticated version of the blend but with a fresh lively persistence. Has a small amount of oak (7 per cent) and is all natural ferment. It's all sav blanc from Karridale and the semillon from this property. Has a light smoky character with plenty of lingering flavour. Great natural acid. Beautiful expression of the style from this area.

James Halliday (2003 Vintage) says
Strong varietal fruit aromas and flavours; depth and length; partial barrel ferment supports gentle tropical fruit.
