How is such astonishing delicacy and refinement achieved in a second label in a vintage as warm, early and ripe as 2010? Unrelenting diligence in The Menzies vineyard.

Quite a mouthful on name alone, this is nice and ripe, showing dark berry, plum and cassis fruit in abundance, some nutty oak with baking spices here too. The palate s juicy, even, finely tannined and really smooth, delivering all that the nose promises in terms of ripe, dark fruit flavour. Sheets of tannins through the finish.

I sincerely doubt that Robert Hill-SmithÕs decision to use corks (especially pockmarked examples as here) will win him many friends in Australia at this price point. All of which is a pity, because this Cabernet Sauvignon has vibrant cassis/mulberry/redcurrant fruit on its well-balanced, medium-bodied palate.

There’s nothing second-grade about the finest vintage of Yalumba’s second label Coonawarra cab. The wine to drink while The Menzies sorts itself out for a decade in the cellar, it sports bright and vibrant red- and blackcurrant fruit, tobacco and, of course, cigar box.

Really looks the goods with its sanguine red dirt origins shining loud in the glass - rusted earth. There's handsomely intense cassis and fresh swept leaves, and some mellow cedary oak in the background. On the palate it's a ripe and fleshy mouthful of supple berry fruits and fine, juicy tannins. The finish is mouth watering, holding long berry flavour in place. This punches well above it's weight!

We tasted a lot of exceptional wines this year but this beauty from Yalumba’s Coonawarra vineyards cornered the holy trinity of quality, value and availability better than any other. Better still, it’s one of those rich, dark, robust reds that drinks like a charm from day one, but will mature and develop beautifully over the next handful of years. You have to love that. As we’re always saying, we’re wine buyers as much as, or more than, we are wine critics, and that this wine shouldn’t be hard to find is a fact not lost on us. No point having a wine of the year if no one can find it, or afford it. And you’re going to want to find some of this. It’s a champion red.

Review: - “Yalumba The Scribbler stole the show last year – this year it’s The Cigar Cabernet. This is a fantastic wine. If this is an indication of the reds to come from the 2008 Coonawarra vintage, we’re excited in advance. Really good Coonawarra cabernet, has a dark, inky depth – even at moderate alcohol levels. It tastes of blackberries and dried herbs, cedarwood and raspberries, though listing the components does nothing to describe the overall effect. There’s a ‘realness’ to this wine. A power. A churn of tannin and a lot of length. It’s enough to make you fall in love with Coonawarra all over again.

Bright, regal cabernet fragrance. This has the poise of truly good cabernet, some cassis and regional minty aromas, sweet spice, olive and gently toasty oak, but the bright cassis shines through. The palate has springy, elegant flavour, neat and even structure; there's fresh cassis here too, and some black cherry. Terrific balance and outstanding value

The cigar is not that of R G Menzies, but the cigar-shaped terra rossa strip in Coonawarra; has clear-cut varietal character, with a medium-bodied mix of blackcurrant, earth and strongly savoury tannins.
