Yarra Burn Shiraz Viognier

Expert Reviews

Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh (2007 Vintage) says
From the name (and location of the winery), you'd expect this to be a Yarra Valley wine, but it's made mostly from grapes grown in the Pyrenees region of north-west Victoria. Quite a lovely wine. It tastes of plums, eucalypt, smoke and musk, and it boasts a delicious softness. It's juicy and flavoursome enough, and we'd have rated it higher were it not for a slightly distracting tartness/bitterness left in the mouth after you swallow. Give the wine a decant and this taste may well disappear - if it does, the wine will be a beauty.

Has plenty of structure and depth to the lush black and red fruits with the usual viognier lift. Pyrenees/Yarra Valley/ Heathcote.

Very good style. Nose of berries and violets with a dash of mint. Big, sweet, ripe palate has retained its vibrancy and is evolving nicely.

Give it some air and it comes up well. It's a lovely mix of ripe - but not overripe - fruit flavours and smart oak. It tastes of ark cherries, plum, wood smoke and spicy oak. There's sappiness lurking beneath, and over the next handful of years you'd reckon these characters will help build a lovely complexity. Balanced finish. Balanced overall. An excellent red wine.
