Zinful Zinfandel

Cracka Rating

Cracka Review

What else would Zinful make but Zinfandel. They have put all their eggs in one basket with this grape variety that has cult status in the USA, but winemaker, Mark Messenger, has been making it for a couple of decades, so he should know 'Zinny' inside out. It's high-octane on the alcohol front, and shows briary red berries, earthy spice and a touch of Christmas cake on the nose. The palate is titanic, with lots of choc-covered fruit, mellow tannins and a spiced plum, dry finish.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2008 Zinful has been made in a fruit-driven, Primitivo style, similar to the way it is made in its homeland of southern Italy. Part of this process is to age the wine in old oak barrels so as not to obscure the wonderful spice and berry fruit characters. A lovely ‘with food’ style.

Church window leadlight red in colour. Baskets of raspberries, cherries and liquorice tease the nose, while the palate delivers a ramble of juicy red berries with a five-spice dusting. Savoury tannins linger once the wine is gone, begging for another taste.

Great drinking now and for the next 5 years or so.
