Encompassing the wine regions of Mudgee, Orange and Cowra, the Central Ranges has shown in a relatively short period of time its potential to produce a wide range of quality wine styles. It has vineyards located at a range of altitudes from around 300m around Cowra up to 1100m in the highest areas near Orange providing a vast array of styles. Mudgee has the most diverse climate with vineyards from 500 to 1050m above sea level allowing the area to create not only robust hearty wines, primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, to more delicate, aromatic white wines from the likes of Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Cental Ranges has a long history of wine production with 13500 liters reported in Cowra during the 1879 new South Wales Agricultural senses. A large German population in Mudgee during the late 1800’s also bought a significant grape vine population. Surprisingly the cold hills of Orange did not follow suit and it was only in the late 1980’s with Rosemounts extensive planting in 1988 an important step forward for the area. Today it continues to thrive with young producers such as Peter Logan of Logan wines helping to drive the regions’ fortunes forward.
