About Strathbogie Ranges

The spectacular throughbred country of Strathbogie Ranges is a landscape of rocky mountain outcrops, forests and waterfalls. The cool, high altitude region is recognised for wines of perfume, elegance and aromatic lift. Soft, more generous styles originate from warmer sites on the lower slopes. Shiraz makes standout wines with vibrant fruit and spicy flavour. Pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon are also significant. White wines include crisp chardonnay, herbaceous sauvignon blanc and riesling. Located 150km north of Melbourne, the Strathbogie Ranges are one of five central Victorian wine regions. The main regional centres are Eurora, Violet Town, and Strathbogie. Modern viticulture was established in the young wine growing area largely in the 1970s. There are over now 1,500 ha planted to vine. The region has an overriding cool climate and extended growing season. There is a crisp mountain air breeze and light winter snowfall. Elevations range from160-600 metres in altitude. Soils range from alluvial sands to ancient granitic and sandy loams.
