Kilikanoon was founded by Kevin Mitchell in 1997 with a vision to create premium quality wines from estate owned vineyards. The company retains its 'family run' feel regardless of broad vineyard acquisition. In recent years Kilikanoon has produced wines from France as an addition to their portfolio, including a Vouvray from the Loire Valley and Syrah based wines from the Rhone Valley. The consortium has also purchased the historic Seppeltsfield winery in the Barossa Valley, famed for its world leading fortified wines. Located in the premium wine growing region of Clare Valley, South Australia, Kilikanoon owns and controls over 500 hectares of vineyards throughout South Australia. Famed sites like the Mort’s Block vineyard, planted by Mort Mitchell, the father of Kilikanoon founder and chief winemaker Kevin Mitchell, are a focus for premium wines. Shiraz is the foremost variety for Kilikanoon, but there has been great interest in their Riesling wines, particularly from Mort's Block. The range of Kilikanoon wines are known for being full flavoured and often muscular in style. The winemaking is overseen by Kevin Mitchell and takes place at the Kilikanoon purpose-built winery. Open ferments, basket pressing, new oak and fruit ripeness play a large part in the winemaking process.
